Join our Hike for Hope and raise vital funds to help us improve and save lives,  making a meaningful impact for those who need us most.

Are you ready for an adventure that makes a difference? Lace up your walking boots and join us for an unforgettable sponsored hike in support of HBA Support this summer.  Whether you're a seasoned walker or would like to set yourself a new challenge, this event is your chance to gather with friends, colleagues and family and be part of a community united by compassion and a desire to make a difference.

Join our Hike for Hope, where, together as a team, we will conquer the Kinder Scout Hike, on the Pennine Way in the Derbyshire Peaks. This is a moderately challenging hill walk, led by four qualified mountain leaders,  retraces the historic route of the famous mass trespass onto Kinder Scout with an ascent of 1,641 feet (500 metres).

Every penny raised will help us improve and save the lives of patients diagnosed with brain aneurysms, which are  more common than you think -  in fact, it’s estimated that 1 in 30 people have one—that’s over two million people in the UK alone. And every year, more than 5,000 lives are shattered by a sudden rupture, often without warning, with 4 families a week left devastated by the loss of a loved one from a hereditary aneurysm.

By taking part in our Hike for Hope, you will help us raise essential funds to provide vital resources and support for people diagnosed with brain aneurysms and families that have a hereditary risk.

Route

Kinder Scout Hike, Pennine Way, Derbyshire Peaks

A moderately challenging hill-walk retracing the route of the famous mass trespass onto Kinder Scout. We will head up William Clough, following the Pennine Way along the plateau edge, passing the dramatic Kinder Downfall and visiting Kinder Low before returning by an old pack-horse route. There is an ascent of 1,641 feet (500 metres) with the highest point reaching 2,077 feet (633 metres).

Length

9 miles (14½ kilometres) Approx. 4-5 hours of walking

Terrain

Moderately challenging hill walk that is entirely off-road once set off. There are no toilets, shops, or pub stops until the walk is completed. While always following paths, the terrain can be steep, uneven, and rocky at times. It will be necessary to step over small streams, and depending on the weather, some sections may be muddy. For example, it would be challenging to push a pram or wheelchair.

Difficulty

Moderate. A good level of fitness is required. The walking group will be managed by our experienced Mountain Leaders with guides at the front and back, allowing walkers to dictate their own pace. Leaders will be on hand at key sections to provide motivation and direction.

Travel

Participants will be expected to make their own way to the event, where we will be meeting at a designated start point at 8.30am for a 9am start. Parking is available. Please consider car sharing where possible.

Fundraising Pledge: £250

We welcome all supporters and volunteers. We kindly ask you to consider a fundraising target of £250 per participant to help us provide vital support to patients and families who need us. We are grateful for every penny you raise. Your fundraising will make a difference and have a great impact on our work. Please see below for some fundraising ideas.

Participation

Places are strictly limited to 45 people to ensure we run a safe, and fully insured event that everyone can safely enjoy. We strongly recommend you wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the event and the weather, and be mindful of your safety and that of others throughout. We also strongly recommend that you have the right kit as per the list below. Failure to do so may result in injury or an uncomfortable experience.

Safety

All our Mountain Leaders are first aid trained and have been through rigorous training. The event is insured through HBA Support and details available on request. A risk assessment is prepared, and the participants will be fully briefed before the Hike.

Steve Turner
Steve is a qualified Lowland and Mountain Leader and passionate about making the outdoors more accessible for all. He volunteers with Nacro Outdoors Learning - a Manchester-based charity focused on getting young people into the outdoors - often their first experience in the countryside. He also supports the training and development of new leaders in the area. Additionally, he is a leader with Blackdog Outdoors and HF holidays.

Having suffered a brain aneurysm at the age of 21, Andy became one of our Patient Supporters at HBA Support in 2024. Andy recognises that his recovery from his brain aneurysm was underpinned by his health and fitness, and he became a Mountain Leader to continue his fitness journey in 2022.

Peter Cloran
Peter volunteered to assist DofE staff at the school where he taught one day and was hooked! Since then he has completed the Lowland, Moorland and Mountain Leader awards. He holds the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) Gold award and is a NNAS Tutor. He is a volunteer leader for HF holidays as well as taking groups up Yr Wyddfa and on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.

Richard McEvoy
Richard is an experienced outdoor leader with qualifications including Mountain Leader and Outdoor Adventure First Aid, among others, with 30 years of experience planning, organising, and leading solo, group, and DofE Award adventures and expeditions. This includes planning and leading charity fundraising adventures such as The Yorkshire 3 Peaks, National 3 Peaks, Welsh 3000s, and other kayak and mountain bike events.

We expect you to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the event and the weather. Here’s a list of suggested items to bring along. Do keep an eye on the weather and dress/pack accordingly.

  • Snacks & a drink/water bottle

  • Phone or camera for the great views

  • Extra warm layers

  • Walking poles, if needed

  • Sturdy footwear

  • Waterproofs

  • Money for refreshments

Making the most out of your fundraising

There are 2 simple ways to fundraise:

1. Direct people to our JustGiving Event Page which we will provide once you sign up.

2. Simply send people to our general donation page.

Alternatively, if you want to share your story and reasons for taking part, you can create your own Local Giving page, more information on how to do this can be found here.

 

Spread the word
Tell your friends and family about the run via Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.  It can sometimes feel uncomfortable asking people for sponsorship, but letting as many people as possible know what we’re doing is the fastest way to raise awareness. Feel free to share any of our social posts across your social media.
Break it down
If the thought of asking for a donation feels daunting, why not break it down and offer colleagues or friends a fun way of chipping in.  Perhaps you could make a list of every mile you’ll be walking and ask your supporters to sponsor a mile of your journey. 
Keep everyone updated
Keep everyone updated: Keep your supporters up to date with your training progress and fundraising success.  Let everyone know when you’re halfway to your fundraising target, or if you’ve just completed a challenging training hike.  Updates often jog the memory of busy people who had been meaning to donate but not got around to it yet. Don’t forget to tag us in your posts.
Don’t forget your wider community

Often donations come in from wonderful, unexpected sources.  We’ve known donations come from local corner shops and sponsorship from local businesses.  Perhaps your children want to get behind you and organise a cake sale at their school, or do their own mini-sponsored walk?

Ask at work

Many employers have an employee giving scheme, or a chosen charity.  Could you let your company know about us and what we’re doing?  And of course, don’t forget to circulate the Local Giving link around the whole-office email thread!
